The Sunday Morning Post

Good morning, Washington. Whether you’re a loyal fan or recently initiated into World Cup frenzy by an uncharacteristic fist pump after a last-minute header against Brazil, eyes are on Frankfurt today where the U.S. Women’s National Team will play for the World Cup title in the final against Japan. Obama couldn’t make it, but he’s sending a presidential delegation led by Jill Biden.

Morning Roundup: Transit Apathy Edition

Good morning, Washington. Not too upset about the coming Metro fare hike, are we? WJLA is reporting that only four people showed up to last night’s hearing on the measure. Of course, the meeting was held way out in Reston and was only the first of six opportunities that Metro riders will have to voice their opinion on the price increase. Maybe you’re just biding your time. Tax Scandal Grows Even Bigger: This is…

Morning Roundup: More More More Edition

Good morning, Washington. Flickr user zenfrisbee went down to the West Lawn yesterday to catch the festivities surrounding the Dalai Lama’s visit and acceptance of a Congressional Gold Medal. China, naturally, had “solemnly demanded” the cancellation of the event, which saw President Bush appear with the Dalai Lama in public — something no sitting U.S. president has done before. Bush dismissed China’s concerns over the event, saying he didn’t think it would severely damage relations…

Dalai Lama Arrives in D.C. for Congressional Gold Medal

Here’s some video of the Dalai Lama arriving in Washington today from YouTube. Tibet’s spiritual leader will receive a Congressional Gold Medal tomorrow at the U.S. Capitol. The medal, which accompanies a resolution passed last year that recognizes him as “a leading figure of moral and religious authority,” will be presented during a ceremony attended by Preident Bush, representing the first time a sitting U.S. president has met the Dalai Lama in public. If…

Dalai Lama Headed Back to D.C.

The last time the Dalai Lama was in Washington, not even spiritual enlightenment could help him figure out why District residents still lacked voting rights. And now that he’s coming back, maybe he’ll have a little word with President Bush and Congressional Republicans about it. Tibet’s exiled spiritual leader will be in town next week to accept a Congressional Gold Medal. The medal, which accompanies a resolution passed last year that recognizes him as “a…

Morning Roundup: Save The Cheerleader Edition

Good morning, Washington. We have to admit it — we have a soft spot for cheerleader-related crime. And this is a good one: the AP (via WTOP) reports on the case of Anna Lois Miles, a cheerleading coach who is charged with holding an illegal gambling event to raise money to… wait for it… repay bail money she borrowed from the parents of a girl she coached after being arrested for writing bad checks!…

Photo of the Day: April 20, 2007

We love the quiet, calm concentration in Flickr user smleon’s photo of two Buddhist monks working on a sand mandala, with the Dalai Lama looking on approvingly. The monks are creating the mandala at Georgetown University as part of the school’s inaugural “Children of Abraham Arts Week,” an interfaith arts festival. They began work on Tuesday, and are scheduled to complete it for a community celebration this Saturday, after which the mandala will, as…

Politics and Prose, 5015 Connecticut Ave. NW, 7:00 p.m. TUESDAY With the glut of celebrities proclaiming themselves Buddhists, it’s sometimes hard to pin down the historical and ethical roots of this ancient religion. Author Lama Surya Das, who the Dalai Lama calls ‘The American…
