Morning Roundup: An Uneasy Peace Edition

Good morning, Washington. An estimated 10,000 people attended the dedication Sunday of the official memorial for the 32 victims killed at Virginia Tech on April 16. Students at the university, about four hours outside D.C., begin classes for the fall semester today. On the same day as the dedication, about 23 Virginia Tech students living in an off-campus apartment building were taken to hospitals after showing signs of carbon monoxide poisoning. Several of the…

Morning Roundup: What’s Up, Doc? Edition

Ahhhh, the real start of summer: The consistently warmer temperatures … the first night you venture wearing skimpy clothes out … the year’s first Code Orange Bad Air Quality Day. However you prefer measuring the start of the season, the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments is predicting our first Code Orange air quality day today, meaning ozone levels are predicted to be extremely high and the air quality very poor. The Northern Virginia Transportation Commission…

Morning Roundup: The Heat is On Edition

Summer heat is one of those story-in-a-pinch type themes, there for newspapers when the vacation months grow long and no cat has been recently rescued from a neighborhood tree. It’s hard to fault the Post for the attention today, though; after one of the mildest springs in recent memory, yesterday leaped to brain-boiling, shoe-sole-sizzling hot. Temperatures are predicted to moderate, back to around 80, after Thursday, but it’s clearly time to banish thoughts of a…

Morning Roundup: The Morning After Edition

Last night DCist and about 200 people gathered at the Black Cat for Unbuckled, which featured local musicians Cartel (at left in a photo from DCJohn) and Bicycle Thieves — proof positive that as old and stuffy as DCist writers can be, we can still throw a mean party. A full review will be up later today, with pictures to boot. Until then, we can all revel in the fact that this long weekend will…

Out and About: Weekend Picks

Well, this weekend looks like it’s going to be absolutely gorgeous, so we’re hard pressed to recommend doing anything besides rolling around in the grass outside. With a beer. Or seven. That’s our plan, at least. But if you’d like more options, our suggestions follow. And don’t forget to plan ahead: DCist’s Unbuckled concert, featuring Cartel and Bicycle Thieves, is a little less than two weeks away! FRIDAY: >> The third annual AFI and Discovery…

Morning Roundup: What About Bob (And Mark) Edition?

Good morning Washington. As you can probably imagine, just about any D.C.-area newspaper reader has been transfixed on Bob Woodward’s massive piece in today’s Post detailing how the Post’s iconic reporter became acquainted with W. Mark Felt who would become Deep Throat and together managed to topple the Nixon administration. There’s no need to summarize the whole thing here. Just go read it, just so you know what everyone is talking about at the water…

Wasn’t This Mystery Settled in 1999?

We think that Woodward, Bernstein, Bradlee et al, have this whole Deep Throat thing wrong. W. Mark Felt? Seriously, didn’t the good folks over at 15th and L streets see the 1999 movie “Dick”? In all seriousness, there is still another mystery that needs to to be cleared up. Where are the sketchy parking garages that Mr. Felt and Mr. Woodward used to exchange information? And will historic preservationists push to declare the sites landmarks?…

Some Woodward and Berstein Watergate Notes Revealed

The University of Texas at Austin is opening to the public today part of their collection of the notes created by Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein during the Watergate scandal. The University of Texas purchased the notes for $5 million in 2003. The documents include the image to the right, the first page of Bob Woodward’s notebook from the preliminary hearing for the men arrested for breaking into the Democratic National Committee…
