New Bill Would Mandate Lead Testing At All D.C.-Owned Playgrounds With Synthetic Materials
The bill comes in the wake of an environmental analysis showing that 17 D.C. school playgrounds contained elevated levels of lead.
The closures went into effect at Aiton Elementary School, Cardozo Education Campus School, and Thomson Elementary School on Friday.

Environmental groups and some councilmembers have opposed the nomination of Greer Gillis, the former leader of the Department of General Services, to the Public Service Commission.
A total of seven fields failed annual tests in the spring and weren’t fixed until the fall, and if officials used a more stringent standard, about half the city’s artificial turf fields would fail.
