Wizards Face Tough Stretch

What was once an entertaining season for the Washington Wizards has quickly gone down the proverbial drain so fast most people are afraid to ask “What’s next?” In the last 12 days, the team has lost Caron Butler and Gilbert Arenas for the season, lost the third seed in the Eastern Conference playoff picture, lost the Southeast Division crown to the Miami Heat and also lost six in a row, with four of those…

Butler, Jamison Return, Wiz Win Pair

Antawn Jamison and Caron Butler returned from their injuries over the weekend and the nearly full strength Wizards won a pair of games, defeating Atlanta 93-92 on Friday and winning a wild one yesterday over Golden State 107-106. We’ll start with the Golden State game, as it had one of the strangest endings I’ve ever seen in a basketball game. Down two with just over two seconds remaining, Gilbert Arenas drove to the hole…

Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse

Spring appears to have, er, sprung, at least temporarily, in most of the Ist-A-Verse, so naturally, we’re all feeling pretty good. (Yes, we know that spring doesn’t officially start till later this month. Just let us enjoy our weather!) And that makes us that much more eager to share all of the nifty things we’re up to… Over at Sampaist, spring has more than sprung: it’s sweltering! But, as everyone knows, museums are an ideal…

Red Auerbach, R.I.P.

Washington D.C. lost one of its favorite adopted sons over the weekend as Arnold “Red” Auerbach passed away at the age of 89. Best known as the patriarch of the Boston Celtics, Auerbach had close ties to D.C., the city he called home for much of his life. Auerbach attended George Washington University from 1937-1940, starring on the basketball team as the team’s top scorer. In 1946, after stints in the Navy and as…

Big Museum Squashes Electric Car Display

Washington is no stranger to the submarining of eco-friendly technologies; back in the 1950s, Capital Transit’s extensive and successful District streetcar system was stripped of its license to operate and sold to new owners charged expressly with replacing the electric system with buses. Now a green techology that rose and fell in the 1990s is the subject of new debate in the city, and the Smithsonian is facing public scrutiny over its role in the…

Cue Up Smashmouth

Yesterday the NBA announced the reserve rosters for the 2005 NBA All Star Game in Denver, Co. and to no one’s surprise, a pair of Wizards heard there names called out. Take a bow Antawn Jamison and Gilbert Arenas, you deserve it. Ballots had already been cast and counted before Arenas tied his career high with 43 points against the slumping Indiana Pacers on Monday night. Not wanting to be left out, Jamison chipped in…

Wizards Are Impressive So Far

Lost amid the Redskins “playoff push” and the whole DC Baseball brouhaha has been a quiet but impressive start to the season by that other pro sports franchise in town, the Washington Wizards. The Wiz were shot down by the Miami Heat last night 98-93, making them 0-4 against the Heat this season, but take away those 4 losses and the team is a very impressive 12-4. Even with them, their record is good enough…
