Photo by morejazz3. Councilmember Tommy Wells (D-Ward 6) has sure had a busy start to his autumn. First, he came to the defense of disabled Segway riders who wanted to ride on the sidewalk. Then, he battled the oppressive governmental restrictions on raising chickens in your backyard. Now, all he has to do is work around the District’s $20 million reduction in funding for homeless services in the budget for fiscal year 2010, a…

Morning Roundup: Hikes and Housing Edition
It’s Friday, Washington, and reactions are still rolling in to Metro’s approval of its largest fare hikes ever. We all knew this was coming, but we’re curious to hear if any of our readers actually plan to make changes to their commuting habits come January 6, when the increases will go into effect. Do you think you’ll ride Metro any less, or finally make the leap to using SmarTrip? Let us know in the comments….

The Weekly Feed: Exasperated Edition
Hudson to Replace David Greggory We mentioned Hudson back in May, when the first news of the transition in store for David Greggory’s Restau Lounge at 21st and M St. NW broke. We get a little more info about this change this week. In the TomChat, we learn that the change will take place sometime next month, and that—contrary to what we’ve heard before—Chef Greggory Hill will be heading elsewhere. Hill will be replaced by…

Yummy at Heineman Myers Contemporary Art
Written by DCist contributor Lynne Venart Heineman Myers Contemporary Art owner Zoe Myers snatched up Claire Johnson at the most recent Art Basel in Miami. In her first show at the Bethesda gallery, Johnson’s work is sure to spark speculation about the best donut shop in the area, for all of her works in Yummy, a new show of work inspired by food, are donut portraits. Johnson, a former portrait painter, fell in love with…

Fenty Names More Cabinet Appointees
Mayor Adrian Fenty held a press conference this morning to announce a slew of new cabinet-level nominations for his administration. Topping the list was his decision to go with current interim director of DCRA, Linda Argo, as his nominee to run the department. Argo was previously deputy director of DCRA, responsible for the agency’s public service enhancements. It’s a somewhat uncharacteristic move from Fenty, who has tended to focus his hiring efforts on bringing in…

Post Critics Seeing Red
The liberal blogosphere is atwitter over the recent debut of Red America, a blog unabashedly aimed at educating us decadent coastal types on the finer points of mid-American wisdom. The general point of view among the technorati is that the blog, authored by Ben Domenech, is a response to criticism the Post has received over a perceived liberal bias, specifically in the blog written by Post journalist Dan Froomkin. Froomkin’s White House Briefing focuses on…

Development Sparks Controversy in Shaw
New development in the historic Shaw neighborhood has put two restaurateurs’ liquor licenses on uncertain footing and sparked a conflict about the future of the neighborhood. The restaurants are located on Ninth Street between the new Convention Center and Rhode Island Avenue, just blocks from both the Mt. Vernon Square and Shaw Metro stations and steps from where this DCist lives. They also both happen to be located a stone’s throw from Shiloh Baptist Church,…

The Weekly Feed: Funny Letters and Meat Edition
à ê î õ û Don’t get us wrong. DCist loves our vegetables. We love our vegetarian friends. We even went to an all-veggie dinner at the new hotness in Shaw, Vegetate, this last weekend. Sometimes, though, all you need is a huge slab of roasted meat. Brazil to the rescue! As usual. D.C. is nary a month away from the opening of Fogo de Chão, a “southern Brazilian-style” churrascaria (Portuguese for “meatatorium”) downtown. What…

Off to the Races!
At long last DCist will be able to speak of a “mayoral candidate,” instead of always adding disclaimers that a given person is merely “thinking of running” or still in the “exploratory phase.” No more beating around the proverbial District bush — Adrian Fenty, a councilmember from Ward 4, is running for mayor. Fenty made the announcement, never much of a surprise, this morning, surrounded by friends and family at his childhood home in…

Another Week of Government Shakeup
For many people, the presidential election was a choice between sticking with an administration during times of trouble or getting rid of the regime that got us into the messes in the first place. Well, America must be feeling lucky today, because as the Cabinet continues to pass through the revolving door of appointment and unemployment, it’s clear that we got to have both. DCers will be burdened with having to remember a host of…
