Why Washington Walks
A new report from the Brookings Institution shows that the D.C. metro area has the most “walkable places” per capita of any American city — one for every 264,000 people, beating out even New York City for walkability. Visiting Fellow Christopher B. Leinberger says that the Washington region could serve as the model for the direction the country’s other metro areas are heading over the next generation. The Associated Press already picked up on the…

College Hoops Rundown: …and They’re Off!
The mid-November start to the NCAA basketball season tends to get lost in the universe of sports coverage. This is probably due to the staggered opening nights around the country, but can also be attributed to competition with other sports — college football entering its stretch run, the NFL in midseason, even the NBA’s opening weeks garner more attention than college hoops. We’re not about to let this exciting time slip through the cracks. With…

MLS Cup 2007 Preview
Our beloved D.C. United may have crashed and burned (again) in the MLS playoffs this season, but life goes on. Also, the playoffs go on — right in our backyard, in fact. Many moons ago, Washington was picked to host the 2007 MLS Cup this Sunday at noon, at RFK. Time to put aside your grieving and check out the game. Tickets start at $30, maybe even less on Craigslist. When else are you going…

United Rocked by K.C.
After weeks on the road in hostile conditions, United had been looking forward to Saturday night’s MLS home opener for quite some time. The boisterous 22,358 in attendance were determined to make United’s homecoming a pleasant one. The driving rain and potent Kansas City Wizards offense were not. The Wizards took advantage of United’s defensive lapses with polished finishing to claim a 4-2 victory. It took only 3 minutes for the Wizards to deliver…

United Host K.C. in Home Opener
D.C. United hope to pick up their first win of the season when they square off against the Kansas City Wizards tomorrow night at RFK. United comes into MLS play with high expectations, bringing back last year’s MVP, Goalkeeper of the Year, and Defender…

Caps Briefing: No Soap. Radio.
So some Penguins walk out of arena negotiations… The Pittsburgh Penguins are staying in Pittsburgh. After years of debate, the Pennsylvania government agreed to open up a bunch of casinos and use the revenue to keep the best young collection of hockey players anywhere on Earth right squarely in the Iron City. While this is great news for the Penguins and all of their fans, it is terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad news for the…

Save the Date: United vs. Beckham FC, August 9
D.C. United announced its MLS schedule yesterday, and we’ll cut to the chase: you have exactly 183 days before David Beckham comes to Washington. He’ll be here on August 9 for a Thursday night game, but unless you’re planning to buy a full season ticket package, tickets won’t be available until July 2. And that goes for half-season and flex plans too — the August 9 match against Beckham’s LA Galaxy (formerly known as…

United Look To Build On Success
Written by DCist contributor Matt Bourque. With four MLS Cups under their belts, DC United can accurately claim to be the most successful franchise in the league’s ten year history. Behind such legends as Marco Etcheverry, John Harkes, Raul Diaz Arce, and Roy Lassiter, DC United has procured the reputation as the team to beat in American soccer. After a disappointing first round exit from last season’s playoffs, DC United is off to a blistering…
