The mother of Karon Hylton-Brown’s one-year-old daughter has filed a lawsuit on her behalf. Two officers involved had previously been indicted on local and federal charges.

MPD officer Terence Sutton and lieutenant Andrew Zabavsky received federal charges of conspiracy and obstruction of justice.

Hylton-Brown, 20, died last October after being pursued by D.C. Police officers while on a rental moped.

Parts of the proposed bill already exist in police orders or municipal law, but advocates say additional teeth are needed to prevent and prohibit police chases.

Community members in Brightwood Park also allege a pattern of police harassing young Black boys in the neighborhood.

Nine people were arrested on the fifth night of protests over the death of 20-year-old Karon Hylton-Brown.

Karen Hylton, Karon’s mother, stood outside the Fourth District station again Friday night asking to talk to police in hopes of getting some answers about her son’s death.

The police union and Charles Allen exchanged tweets Thursday night over the way protests have been handled following Karon Hylton-Brown’s death.

Hylton died Monday, three days after a moped crash following a police pursuit in Brightwood Park.

Demonstrators held a vigil for Hylton at the spot where he died last week before marching to the Fourth District police station.
