The Emancipation Memorial in Lincoln Park was a flashpoint in the public debate over monuments following George Floyd’s killing.

Norton has proposed removing four statues and memorials, including a Confederate general, a racist president, and a controversial depiction of Lincoln.

Neighbors, protestors, and public figures have weighed in on the statue’s imagery.

“It’s time to take down monuments that memorialize the intended subservience of black people in this country,” the petition says.

“I was shocked and disgusted that this could happen four blocks from where I live.”
