Introducing saƒia
Well, it’s not really as much an introduction as it is a re-branding. Back in 2008, we introduced our readers to a local artist named Muhsinah. A few months later, she was gracious enough to accept DCist’s invitation to be the headliner at Unbuckled 7. Since then, she’s been anything but complacent. Mushinah was nominated for a Grammy in 2010 and contributed for another nominated album.

Muhsinah Gets Grammy Nod
We were a little late to this one, but when a press release hit our inbox about Muhsinah, we had to spread the word. The Three Stars and Unbuckled 7 alumna was nominated for a Grammy in the “Best Urban/Alternative Performance” category for her work on the track, “Daykeeper.” The song is found on the album Leave It All Behind by two-time DCist interviewees, The Foreign Exchange. She and the guys are up against collaborations…

Unbuckled 7: The Wait is Over
Excitement abounds here at DCist HQ as we’re all abuzz and ready for Unbuckled 7, which finally drops tonight. The show, as you already know, is at DC9 and features the genre blending Three Stars alum, Muhsinah, along with jazz/hip-hop outfit, Motel, led by bassist Matt Grason. Special guest DJ v:shal kanwar will also be joining the fray and setting the mood from behind the decks at various times throughout the night. Judging from…

Unbuckled Preview: Muhsinah
Since DCist last spoke to Muhsinah back in January, she’s been in almost constant motion. In fact, this interview interrupted her work on a track for a London-based artist. Muhsinah’s music is hard to categorize. Her first full length release, day.break, was a multi-layered sonic cake, and a perfect follow-up to the teaser album, The Oscillations EP. Drawing off her fondness for jazz vocals, Indian music and the MPC, she’s placed herself in a…

DCist Presents: Unbuckled 7!
The (far too long) wait is over. After our sixth Unbuckled show, featuring Le Loup and The XYZ Affair that tested the integrity of DC9’s second floor, we needed a little break. Well, we’re sufficiently rested and ready to bring you the goods yet again. As you’ve all probably noticed, we’ve expanded our musical coverage some in the last year. With the talents of Sriram Gopal and W Jacarl Melton, DCist has been able to…

Three Stars: Muhsinah
From the jump, Muhsinah (pronounced Moo-seen-ah) has benefited from the Internet age and the ability for her music to strike a chord with whomever was paying attention to it. As the word and MP3s spread among Web audiofiles, more listeners became fans and she built an impressive list of supporters with her The Oscillations EP in 2005. The Duke Ellington School of the Arts and Howard University jazz studies grad from upper Northeast D.C., who…

Album Review: Muhsinah’s day.break
If you’re just looking at the track lengths listed for Muhsinah’s day.break, it’d be hard to conceive how 10 songs squeezed into a little over 27 minutes could provide much in terms of listening. How much can really be done in about two-and-a-half minutes? It turns out, a lot. Muhsinah manages to pack a variety of sounds into every dense composition, causing even the most casual listener to key in on one aspect for the…
