Adams Morgan resident Suzanne Allan wanted to send a message about D.C. statehood — and what better messenger than the city’s notorious rats?

The murals are up on Martin Luther King. Jr. Ave. just weeks before Election Day.

The city categorizes building and house painting as essential work, and some business owners have commissioned new art.

The 70-foot-tall mural on the corner of 14th and U streets was dedicated on Tuesday morning.

The Truxon Circle mural was painted with $50,000 from the D.C. Commission on Arts and Humanities.

“I have to make sure that this is something that inspires you,” the artist says.

Dave Chappelle, Dick Gregory, Jim Vance, and Eleanor Holmes Norton all saw their likenesses at the unveiling.

And no Bill Cosby.

It will formally be unveiled on June 2, but the new figures will start taking shape much sooner.
