About Tonight

>> Mic Harrison (formerly of Superdrag) brings some alt-country goodness to the Velvet Lounge tonight, with The High Signs and Julie Ocean (ex-Velocity Girl). Show starts at 9 p.m. >> SILVERDOCS is in its first full day, so head on up to Silver Spring to check out a wide array of documentary film on offer. We’d recommend Oliver Hodge’s Garbage Warrior at 8:45 p.m., about New Mexico architect Michael Reynolds, who builds homes out…

D.C.’s ‘State’ Easter Egg, Eggsamined

No offense to Mary Steingesser, the artist who attempted to capture the spirit of the District of Columbia for our official 2007 “State Easter Egg” this year. It’s a perfectly lovely rendering of the White House on an egg, we suppose. But we just wouldn’t be us if we didn’t take a moment to point out that a) Using the White House as the symbol for D.C. is so 2004 (2005’s egg was the Washington…

Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse

Austinist gets arty with an interactive guide to SXSW, loved some local art galleries and a new art exhibit and lamented the possible loss of “Friday Night Lights” production to New Mexico. Bostonist was happy they finally found an Anna Nicole Smith connection to their fair city and that an Apple Store was opening up. They were less happy that new rules have been established limiting underage shows and that their Governor is spending…

Festival Gives DC a Taste of Tango

Many DCists’ tango knowledge draws exclusively from sexy Antonio Banderas dance scenes, Scent of a Woman, or that Shakira video in constant rotation at Gold’s Gym. But there’s an entire world of tango out there, and the district is showcasing the sultry dance this week during the Washington DC Tango Festival. Tonight and Wednesday, tango goes to the movies, as the Argentinian embassy screens Tango Maestro — The Life and Music of Astor Piazzolla this…

Morning Roundup: Rally Round the Stadium Edition

Good morning, Washington. With the holidays bearing down upon us, we hope your preparations are going well whatever they might entail. Since our friends on the hill spent the weekend hard at work, we thought we would choose a photo of the New Mexico Holiday Tree for our morning roundup. The photo was tagged for us by Flickr user pattista. Rallies For, Against Stadium Planned: If you’re going to be near the Wilson Building around…

For Maryland, It Was A Very Good Day

Maryland’s mens soccer team won their first national title since 1968 and shook off three years of frustrating losses in semifinals of the College Cup with a 1-0 victory over the University of New Mexico last night in Cary, NC. Senior Marc Burch, a transfer from Evansville, found the back of the net in the 31st minute to give the Terps the lead and freshman goalkeeper Chris Seitz all but sealed the deal in…

Norton Wants Statues for D.C.

Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.), our non-voting representative in the U.S. Congress, yesterday requested that the District be allowed to place two statues in the U.S. Capitol’s Statuary Hall, at right, where each state is granted the right to place two statues of prominent citizens. The request came during a debate on New Mexico’s request to place a statue of Po’pay, a Native American leader who launched what has been called “the first American Revolution”…

We Watch So You Don’t Have To

(Editor’s Note: Sometimes, technology issues can slow down even the most tech-savvy DCist. Fortunately, DCist’s backup communications network using courier pigeons has brought us Hemal Jhaveri’s weekly “West Wing” roundup.) California … here we come … California! Ooops. Wrong show. It’s Super Tuesday in “West Wing” land, and the Dems are each fighting for a win in the California primary. Santos, Russell and Hoynes are in the depths of primary campaigning, each trying to eek…

Examiner Target: Sutton Place, Greater Capitol Hts.?

We hate to nit-pick the Examiner since it is for sure still trying to find its niche and work through the inevitable problems that come with starting a newspaper from scratch. But we feel it necessary to comment on something we saw on page 3 of the District edition. Yes, we already mentioned the “Speed cameras are working” article in today’s Morning Roundup, but there is something we came across when picked up the…

Rumsfeld Buys Carrots, Pushes Cart Around Whole Foods

Ever since the Glover Park Whole Foods opened, it seems to have taken away a lot of the celebrity luster that the Social Safeway in Georgetown used to have a monopoly on. This DCist has seen a number of famous-for-D.C. types in the aisles of the Glover Park Whole Foods, including Joe Lockhart (when his Glover Park Group was actually in Glover Park.) Now we hear that last Sunday, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, with…
