Maryland’s mens soccer team won their first national title since 1968 and shook off three years of frustrating losses in semifinals of the College Cup with a 1-0 victory over the University of New Mexico last night in Cary, NC. Senior Marc Burch, a transfer from Evansville, found the back of the net in the 31st minute to give the Terps the lead and freshman goalkeeper Chris Seitz all but sealed the deal in the second half, showing great ability and range when he stopped a penalty kick by the Lobo’s Andrew Boyens to preserve the lead. Seitz is the first frosh keeper to mind the nets for a national champion since some guy named Brad Friedel did it in 1990. Wonder whatever happened to him…

“I think we’ve been the best team in the nation all season and we proved that today,” senior Jason Garey told the Post. Maryland has won more games than any Division I school over the past four years.

The Terps basketball team was also in action yesterday and they opened up conference play in the ACC with a win over 6th ranked Boston College, 73-71. The Terps had a costly turnover with 2.2 seconds left in the game when they failed to inbound the ball, but escaped with the win when BC couldn’t take advantage of it.

Parrish Brown and Sterling Ledbetter both played well off the Terp bench, subbing for point guard D.J. Strawberry after he was called for two quick fouls in the first half. Ekene Ibekwe led the Terps with 21 points and nine rebounds. Steady Chris McCray chipped in with 16 points in 38 minutes.

Next up for Maryland is American University on Friday, December 23. American won it’s second straight game, defeating Towson 74-70 over the weekend behind Garrison Carr’s career high 25 points.
