“The Android version will include all of the features the current iOS-only version has, including finding bus, Metro, and Circulator stops near you, real-time arrivals at each stop, saving favorite stops for easy access, route maps for every line, and a searchable list of routes,” developer Jason Rosenbaum said in an email.

This morning, we learned that WMATA was planning on installing public information displays — kind of like the ones that tell you how soon your train is coming — in dozens of bus shelters around the region.

The folks at NextBus have just released an application for the BlackBerry, available for $2.99 at this link. It appears to work somewhat similarly to the iPhone version, which we reviewed earlier this year. BlackBerry users, be sure to let us know how it works for you. WMATA now says that NextBus, e-alerts, debit card transactions, SmartBenefits and all other remaining electronic systems that were affected by today’s outage were back online by 3:30 p.m. this afternoon. NextBus was indeed working when we tested it just before 5 p.m. Be sure to let us know if you run into any continuing problems on your commute home this evening….

We’ve been following the massive systems outages at WMATA all day, and now Metro says that its public address system is again up and running. Debit card transactions, credit card purchases of more than $20, NextBus, SmartBenefits and the e-alert system are all still not functioning, however. We’ll be keeping an eye on the situation as the evening commute rapidly approaches….
