Even as the mayor unveiled the new investments and touted her accomplishments in reducing family homelessness, activists continuously interrupted her speech with chants of “This is our home,” and “Stop the war on the poor.”
Bowser also announced that she plans to add $10 million in this year’s budget for affordable housing preservation and pledged to fix all the city’s roads within five years.
At the 2016 State of the District speech, she said she would submit legislation next month.
“I say this to all of you now, clearly and unequivocally: I didn’t break the law.”
Between now and June, the city “will identify and lease at least 500 apartments for homeless families using either Rapid Re-Housing or Permanent Supportive Housing vouchers.”
Three of his opponents are planning their own responses.
Gray will deliver the address at Kelly Miller Middle School, 301 49th Street NE, at 7 p.m.
