WTOP has a copy of a letter the D.C. Council sent to President-Elect Obama, urging him to place the District’s “Taxation Without Representation” license plates on his presidential limousine. No big shock that the Council would push for the pro-D.C. voting rights symbol, but is it somewhat surprising that both Mayor Adrian Fenty and Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton have said they will not press the issue with Obama?
Probably not. Fenty and Norton want to seen as focused on getting Norton’s bill passed in the Senate, not pestering the President-Elect with something so small during the transition period. Still, given how confident both Fenty and Norton have publicly been on whether Obama supports their cause, it does come off as a little bit of a disconnect to let the Council carry all the water on the license plate issue. It may only be a symbol, but if Obama can’t be bothered with such a small indication of support, how are disenfranchised D.C. residents supposed feel about that?
