Perhaps adding confusion to the District’s shifting demographics, new Census data shows some interesting, if contradictory, trends, the Post reports. For instance, there are more married couples in D.C., but also more single mothers. Also, children are disappearing, sort of. The city’s school-age population has decreased since 2000, but ranks of toddlers have increased.

In Crestwood, an affluent black neighborhood in Northwest, there are so few children that residents have had to import them from other parts of the city for the annual Halloween party. But James Jones, president of the Crestwood Neighborhood League, said more children now come to the yearly event, a growing number of whom are white.

Rates of home ownership have increased in the District, as have housing prices, which have made considerable jumps. In 2000, the median home price was $177,619. It was $248,171 last year.
