Could you stop terrorism on your daily bus ride? Do you know how to react in an emergency situation on metrorail? If you can, or want to learn how, you might be perfect for WMATA’s “Metro Citizen Corps.”
A press release issued yesterday is somwhat scant on details, but it appears that the folks who run the region’s public transit system are unveiling a new training program for the average Joe as part of National Preparedness Month. The information session, which looks like it is more for the media, is set for 10 a.m. at WMATA’s Judiciary Square headquarters. DCist is curious and will be watching news accounts on what a “Citizen Corps” is and what activities it will be involved in. Maybe they can be used to fix escalators.
In light of yesterday’s subway bombing in Moscow (AP photo at left) and bus bombings in Israel, it may be a good time to revisit emergency procedures for public transit. WMATA even has a Flash animation on how to evacuate a train so you don’t get electrocuted by the third rail. (Remember, before trying to evacuate a train, wait for instructions from a WMATA official, if at all possible.)
