Today marks the three year anniversary of the horrible terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, which turned a beautiful September morning into a day that changed the nation and the world. Flight 77, out of Dulles Airport, was hijacked, descended on the city and crashed into the northwest side of the Pentagon. Flight 93, out of Newark, N.J., turned around near Cleveland and was heading toward Washington with its eyes on the Capitol, but the plane crashed in Shanksville, Pa.

Today, President Bush will observe a moment of silence at the White House, while the anniversary will also be commemorated at the National Cathedral and at the Arlington Courthouse plaza.

Additionally, there will be a viewing of “The Guys” at the Avalon Theatre on Connecticut Avenue. From an Avalon write-up:

Sigourney Weaver and Anthony LaPaglia star in this powerful and touching drama about a journalist who helps a New York City fire captain write eulogies for his comrades who died on September 11, 2001. Directed by Weaver’s husband Jim Simpson, the film is a deeply personal story set 10 days after the World Trade Center attacks, without the horrific images associated with the event.

Also, DCist’s Kyle Gustafson lived a few blocks away from the World Trade Center at the time of the 9/11 attacks. His photos of the burning towers and the collapse’s aftermath can be seen here.
