Opponents of more firearms in the District can breath easier today. The Post reports yesterday that the proposed repeal of the D.C. gun ban in the Senate has been set aside. The repeal was attached to the DC operating budget, which is one of the few pieces of legislation that must be enacted before Congress adjourns for the fall elections.

Senator Larry E Craig (R-Idaho) withdrew his proposed budget amendment in committee. Craig spokesman Dan Whiting, when asked why the amendment was withdrawn, stated that “We’re going to let the House act first and go from there” .

A variety of political, community and labor leaders have organized to oppose the proposed amendment.
