Just a few days left before the hard-to-read national elections, the weather had its way setting an eerie, spooky tone for the Halloween weekend. Even Osama bin Laden made an unexpected appearance as the fog rolled in and became entrenched Friday night. But then if things couldn’t get more peculiar, they did.
Around 3:45 a.m., DCist was at Cafe Romeo’s, a late-night pizza and sandwich place, located next to Holy Rood Cemetery on Wisconsin Avenue in Glover Park. Just as a group of surprisingly energized Swedish tourists were asking a guy dressed as someone from the Blue Man Group where they could find an after hours club, police sirens sounded from out front.
Through the thick fog, a group of at least 15 Metropolitan Police squad cars and some motorcycle cops drove up Wisconsin Avenue, lights flashing. They were protecting a WMATA metrobus, which drove uptown with its lights out. It was unclear what was inside the darkened bus.
While DCist is used to government helicopters and the occasional motorcade shutting streets down, with the fog, this episode was particularly spooky, something that would make the mind of any conspiracy theorist go wild.
This photo here, taken by DCist around 4 a.m. Saturday, is of the corner of Woodley Road and Wisconsin Avenue, near the National Cathedral. The Cathedral was completely shrouded by the fog. Though the photo may be blurred, DCist likes how the moisture in the fog is interacting with the flash.
