Didn’t we say there were going to be more sparks on the horizon?
D.C. Council Chairman Linda Cropp used her power as chairman to postpone consideration of the proposal to publicly finance a new baseball stadium for two weeks, meaning that at all the drama in the run-up to today’s vote will be dragged out for the better part of the remainder of November. Cropp says she is cooking up an alternative to Mayor Anthony William’s stadium plan that she says would lessen the financial burden on the city.
Cropp shocked baseball observers last Friday by suddenly putting forth a proposal to have the stadium built adjacent to RFK Stadium as most of political capital in the city was being lined up for the mayor’s South Capitol Street location. Cropp’s RFK proposal never gained much public traction. But Cropp never seems to be short of a proposal.
WTOP reports that Cropp’s newest proposal would have the city foot $150 million and a yet-unnamed private entity would cover the remaining $350 million for construction.
As opposition to public financing mounts (Have you seen the influx of signs around the city opposing the baseball plan?), the major political players say that the two-week delay won’t derail the deal. Stay tuned as Cropp’s proposal goes face-to-face with the mayor’s plan … The mayor has seven of the 13 councilmembers lined up behind him, and now some are saying he’s buying their votes with enticing perks for councilmembers’ pet projects, the Post reports.
So, do you think Cropp is a fraud (as the Post’s Michael Wilbon says) or does she have a more savvy plan up her sleeve that will outmaneuver the mayor?
