Tonight is a first for DCers as two predominant area alma maters face off on the football field for the first time as ACC rivals. ESPN will air the conference matchup between #15 Virginia Tech and the University of Maryland at 7:30 p.m. DCist is sure many readers will tune in, or perhaps venture to an alum-filled watering hole for this one.

DCist’s take on the game? We have to admit that biases run deep here, with contributors’ loyalties spread throughout the ACC (and a few other conferences as well), but we can point out a few key aspects of the matchup. In their last five games, Maryland has amassed a stellar four touchdowns, while accumulating just 263 rushing yards. Virginia Tech’s Mike Imoh alone notched 243 rushing yards in the team’s last outing. If Tech drives early to score, they may very well psych out Maryland and take the game. However, the Hokies are known for November meltdowns on strong seasons while playing teams that should be easy wins.

The night boils down to one important thing. Maryland needs this win. Without it, they lose any hope for a bowl bid. Tech also needs this win. With contests against Virginia and Miami coming up, the ACC title is within their reach, along with a BCS Bowl spot.

Which team will you be cheering on?
