We know there is lead in the water system. But it appears that fears over perchlorate leaking into the Dalecarlia Reservoir may intensify now that “a more refined test” showed that water in the Washington Aqueduct has the presence of the toxic chemical in it, the Post reports.

But water officials say there is no cause for alarm as the level of the poison is not significant to pose a health risk. But this discovery is placing the Army Corps of Engineers on defense since it has said that the remains of World War I-era chemical weapons testing in the area don’t pose a threat to the Dalecarlia Reservoir, which is part of the massive aqueduct system serving the capital, Arlington and Falls Church.

This is all happening near the heart of Spring Valley (intersection of Rockwood Parkway, Indian Lane and Glenbrook Road seen here in a DCist photo from the summer), where just blocks away are some of the city’s most pricey residential streets, home to senators, ambassadors, and one top White House political adviser.
