A pirate radio station has been created in Washington to encourage people to protest Bush’s inauguration in January, CNN is reporting. The story was picked up by Metafilter, who links to this station announcement on D.C.’s Indymedia site.

The station, which is broadcasing audio at 1680 AM, said in an announcement their signal could be “received mostly north of R st to about Harvard Street, from the Dupont Circle area east,” and has taken the call sign WSQT, or “The Squat.”

A representative told CNN that the station is run with “about $40 in parts from Radio Shack and the dumpster.” CNN also oddly noted that their programming “featured rap music with urgent, unsettled lyrics that were generally shouted instead of sung.” We assume CNN isn’t too familiar with rap. They also say the FCC is investigating.
