Admit it: You’ve always wanted to have a police scanner. And since D.C. is reportedly the sixth-most dangerous city in the country (despite our dropping homicide rate), a scanner can be the source of endless entertainment. Unfortunately, scanners can be a bit expensive. Enter the D.C. Fraternal Order of Police online police scanner. With Winamp and a sound card, you can listen to the District police go about their work all day.
The scanner, though rather boring on a Monday morning, is a welcome diversion. Two hours of listening today provided news of a “naked black man” near Third and L streets NE (right where this new condo building is going to go in), a suspected break-in near the Benning Road metrorail station, multiple arrests of individuals with “contraband,” and a suspected shooting in Southeast. Its nice to know that D.C. is starting the year off right, not to mention the fact that it ended it well.
