Our friends in San Francisco wrote to let us know that some people in their city are organizing a vigil for people to reflect on the tsunami disaster and connect with others. The effort is part of the larger Global Vigil for the Global Village on the evenings of January 9th, 10th, and the 26th, which will be the 1-month anniversary of the disaster. A group of photobloggers has even issued a call to urge their members to document the vigils.

After some searching, we couldn’t find any information about any vigils organized here, although there are confirmed vigils in San Francisco, London, Toronto, New York, Chicago and other cities. We suspect most area activists are focusing their energy on events surrounding the upcoming inauguration. As we have reported earlier, many in the D.C. region have given donations and left flowers at the embassies of the effected countries. As the event fades from the major media, we suggest following the South-East Asia Earthquake and Tsunami Blog to learn more.

Most of the vigils are beginning at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday night. If any DCists care to organize one online, feel free to use the comments below. Dupont Circle would make a logical location as it is close to many embassies and easily accessible by Metro.
