Washington is an international city and draws people and visitors from around the globe, but it is more often associated with cynicism and politics than with warm fuzzy feelings of goodwill.

That is why it is especially heartening to see local fundraising efforts for tsunami relief activities continue to grow. The latest announcement comes from Georgetown Yoga, which is offering three charity yoga classes, from 5:30-7:00 p.m., on January 16, 23, and 30. Proceeds from the classes will benefit Oxfam America. In addition, the studio is also hosting a Thai yoga massage open house on Feb. 6, from 1:00-3:30 p.m., with mini Thai massage treatments, Thai refreshments, and more. Instructor Matt Borer (pictured above) visited Thailand in December, and organized this effort when he saw the effects of the disaster, which hit a week after his return.

As DCist previously reported, Sala Thai on U Street is hosting a tsunami fundraiser tonight, with live jazz and free tastings. In addition, for those readers to our north, 19 restaurants in Baltimore’s Fells Point will be donating 10 percent of tonight’s proceeds to tsunami relief efforts.

Of course, there’s always the old-fashioned method of giving money directly to aid organizations working in the affected areas. Last week, Congress passed — and the President signed — legislation allowing donations to tsunami relief efforts made during January to be deducted on 2004 income tax filings.
