“We aren’t looking to cry in our beers. No one is moving to Canada,” says Cory Smith, who helped found the D.C. chapter of Drinking Liberally, an “informal, inclusive weekly Democratic drinking club” that has chapters across the nation. While they drink, they talk politics and hope to build the network of people they feel is needed to fortify the health and refuel the spirit of the Democratic Party, which you may have heard has been having some trouble at the polls as of late.
The D.C. chapter got started very recently. Smith tells DCist that their chapter “probably picked one of the worst times to start up the DC chapter-the period between Thanksgiving and the Holidays, even so we have almost 300 people signed up and our getting around 75 people every Thursday.”
So if you are interested in a political happy hour outing, go check them out. In the future the group may change the format by doing an “Indian food night, playing pool, developing a progressive book club, starting a tradition of a Sunday matinee and a bottle of wine.”
Dan Froomkin of the Post’s White House Briefing will be the guest of honor at tonight’s happy hour, which is set for RFD on Seventh Street NW between H and I streets, 6-9 p.m.
