In the week since the NFL concluded its season with the Pro Bowl festivities in Honolulu, football fans have become reacquainted with their spouses and dependents, gotten out of their homes a bit more, and have been uncomfortably reminded of the National Hockey League’s non-existence. But even as the roar of the crowd and memories of another Patriots championship slowly fade, the front office of your Washington Redskins has been buzzing with activity.

Tomorrow is the first day an NFL team can opt to waive a player, and it would appear that the most prominent player to be waived by the Redskins will be wideout Laveranues Coles. This is a real shame, because this DCist has only recently learned to correctly spell his name without checking against a roster. Coles was notably unhappy last season as the lack of a serious deep passing game proved frustrating for the fleet receiver. Replacement possibilities abound, but most of the names save locker room poison pill Randy Moss – like Plaxico Burress and Jerry Porter – don’t exactly uncurb one’s enthusiasm. It may be more likely the Redskins reload at wideout through the draft. While their ninth pick may not be high enough to snag Braylon Edwards – no doubt editor Goodspeed’s preference – the conventional wisdom sees USC’s Mike Williams and South Carolina’s Troy Williamson being available when the Redskins come up to pick.
