Coyotes, which have been spotted in the northern reaches of the District in Rock Creek Park near Oregon Avenue have migrated past Klingle Road, past the National Zoo, past Adams Morgan and now have been spotted near Massachusetts Avenue. This map from RestonPaths.com gives you a good sense as to the area where coyotes have been exploring.
The Post’s headline on the matter, “Coyote Sightings in Park Spread Toward Embassies,” indicates that coyotes could threaten the city’s diplomatic quarters.
This section of Rock Creek Park is considerably narrower than the more northerly sections of the park, so there aren’t too many places they can hide … unless they start infiltrating some of the fingers of woods leading up from that area of the park … the Normanstone Trail, Lover’s Lane, Dumbarton Oaks Park and Montrose Park — all popular dog walking areas (but there haven’t been any recent dog-coyote run-ins reported, the Post indicates).
So who could be in danger? Well, looking at the map, we figure that here’s who’s in the danger zone: The Royal Danish Embassy and Italian Embassy, Harvard’s Center for Hellenic Studies, the Canadaian ambassador’s residence and the homes of Vice President Cheney and New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, among others. Keep your trash cans covered!
