>> Shhhhh…that sound you’re hearing might be Maryland’s already precarious NCAA Tourney hopes going down the drain after this weekend’s disappointing 86-76 loss at Virginia Tech. The Terps have dropped their last three contests to leave their conference mark at 7-9. Only a strong showing in this week’s ACC tournament can save the Terps from missing the Big Dance for the first time since 1993. Sound familiar Terp fans? Maryland faced a similar situation last year and they promptly went out and won the conference tournament. Will a repeat be in the cards this year? Unfortunately for Gary Williams and Co., the team will open on Thursday against Clemson, a team they’ve lost to twice this year. Stay tuned to DCist for more coverage of the ACC Tournament, which tips off on Thursday at the MCI Center.
>> Think losing your last three games is bad? Georgetown is on a five game skid that has all but finished their NCAA chances. Providence’s Ryan Gomes was fouled as he hit an off balance jumper with 1.8 seconds left in the game and hit the ensuing free throw to cap a 68-65 win for the Friars. The Hoyas finished with a .500 conference record in the Big East and will open their conference tourney on Wednesday at 7PM against Seton Hall.
>> After a tough loss earlier in the week to St. Joe’s, GW bounced back against Rhode Island, holding the Rams to 25% shooting from the floor in a decisive 68-39 victory. The W gives the Colonials the crown in the A10’s West Division and has GW thinking big as they enter the conference tourney, something the school has never won. Despite their impressive 19-7 record, GW will likely need a few more wins to get an NCAA birth. They will face the winner of the Duquesne v. Fordham matchup on Thursday at 6:30 PM. GW has beaten both teams during the regular season.
