Moby, everyone’s favorite bald vegan techno musician and longtime blogger, is coming to the 9:30 Club on April 14 in support of his fifth official album “Hotel,” to be released on March 22. The album is said to be along the lines of the blockbuster album “Play” and its less successful follow up “18.” Unlike its predecessors, however, “Hotel” doesn’t feature any vocal samples; instead, all the vocals are performed by Moby and guest vocalist Laura Brown. Tickets for the concert are available now.
Why “Hotel”? In a blog entry, Moby says he’s fascinated with hotels because
they’re incredibly intimate spaces that are scoured every 24 hours and made to look completely anonymous… every time we check into a hotel room we feel as if we’re the first guest and we get very upset if there’s any remnant of a previous guests stay… we enter a hotel room and it becomes our biological home for a while and then we leave
The first single off of “Hotel”, the dance-y “Lift Me Up,” was performed almost entirely by Moby. Some have theorized that the lyrics are a veiled political statement against the current administration; expect Moby’s performance of this and older, more political songs like those off of 1995’s “Everything is Wrong” to be particularly charged when he comes to D.C. He’s written before about his views of this city; it will be interesting, in today’s political climate, to see what Moby brings to the stage.
