George Washington University will make their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 1999 tonight when they take on the Georgia Tech Yellowjackets at 9:40 PM in Nashville TN. Credit head coach Karl Hobbs and his tireless recruiting for getting the Colonials back on the national basketball map. GW was 12-16 in Hobbs first year but has steadily improved since then, including a trip to the NIT last year.
Understandably, Hobbs was less than thrilled to be taking on the ACC Tournament runner-up. “As soon as I saw Georgia Tech pop up I said: I hope I don’t see GW next,” Hobbs told the Post. “I hope I see the Wizards, anybody, somebody, but I hope I don’t see GW. That’s a very good basketball team we’re going to be playing, a team that’s good enough to win the championship.” But after some reflection, maybe the Colonials match up well with the Ramblin’ Wreck. “Georgia Tech is scary, but my guys aren’t going to go in there nervous, I promise you that,” Hobbs said. “We played at Wake Forest on ESPN in that wild atmosphere, we played at West Virginia when the place was packed to the rafters. Places like Xavier and Dayton are some of the toughest to play in the country. . . . My guys know that they can play with anyone if they play their game.”
