Spring has sprung (well, sort of), and concerts in the D.C. area are in full bloom. We thought we had enough on our plate with the upcoming April and May line ups, but with some concert announcements in the past week, there’s even more than we expected.
>> Bright Eyes sold out quickly the last time he came around, but apparently he can’t get enough of the District – dreamboat Conor Oberst (at right) is back for two nights in May to showcase his more electronic album “Digital Ash in a Digital Urn.” His labelmates the Faint will open with their exciting dance-rock. 9:30 Club, May 26 and 27.
>> Former frontman of the Replacements, one of the finest rock bands of the 80s, Paul Westerberg has had a satisfying solo career. He brings his extraordinary singer-songwriter abilities and lovely folk-rock jangle to the 9:30 Club on April 29. You can purchase tickets here.
>> We can’t cite ourselves as huge fans of Audioslave, but the band formed of former Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell and members of Rage Against the Machine has definitely become a formidable force in the music scene. Their presale for their May 1 concert at the 9:30 Club is already sold out, but regular tickets go on sale tomorrow at 5 p.m. at tickets.com, so have your keyboards at the ready.
>> Sometimes we’re pretty sure there’s nothing better than sitting on your porch on a summer’s day, listening to some Tom Petty. Well, if you feel like heading out to Merriweather Post Pavilion on July 27th, you can catch him live with the Black Crowes. We’re not sure when tickets are available, but we’ll keep an eye out.
>> If dreamy, joyous and layered indie rock is more your style, you should be sure to check out the Built to Spill concert on May 16 at the 9:30 Club.
>> And this isn’t a concert announcement, but local musician Mike Holden of Arlingtonmusicscene.com pointed out to us that the revived HFStival is once again hosting their “Big Break” performance, which gives one local band a chance to open the festival. If you think you might want to enter, check out the rules on the front page of Live 105.7. Entries are due April 1.
