FROSTBURG, Md. — From the DCist mobile command center on I-68, we present to you our picks for stuff you should do this weekend. (Actually, we did this early this morning, we think we’ll be around Frostburg around lunchtime. But wouldn’t it be cool if we did have a mobile command center? C’mon Jake, can you spare a few pennies for that? We promise we won’t take it on any joyrides …)

Anyhow, with Catherine in Italy, here is the pooled-resources of the rest of DCist for your weekend picks.

FRIDAY:

>> Charlie Palmer Steak’s April special has been extended until Memorial Day, but tonight seems the perfect night to check it out. Just be sure to make your reservations early, as the restaurant can get very busy.

>> Former Replacements frontman Paul Westerberg plays a late show at the 9:30 Club. Expect a show much like he used to give with The ‘Mats back in their heydey; slightly drunk, increasingly sloppy and very hit or miss. But according to reports from his NYC show earlier in the week, expect some old Replacement tunes like Little Mascara, Swingin’ Party, Skyway and Kiss Me on the Bus. Doors are at 10 p.m. and tickets cost $25.

SATURDAY:
>> Ever been curious about what happens in a “crowded rural household” where everyone “aggressively quarrels” that involves a large wedding where everything “slowly metamorphoses into a carnival of craziness” all in Russian with English subtitles? Check out 2002’s “Chehkov’s Motives” at 2 p.m. at the National Gallery of Art‘s East Building Auditorium. Plays as part of the “The Absurd World of Kira Muratova” film series.

>> If your mom’s in town for an early Mother’s Day weekend, she might appreciate the Natural History Museum’s Allure of Pearls exhibit. But if she comes out of it wanting a pearls of her own, don’t blame us.

>> DJ ReddAJ and special guest The Holiday Girl bring the Razzmatazz party to the Black Cat’s Backstage room. The music stars at 10 PM and admission is $5. On their mailing list, they describe the night as “A slightly Pulp-flavored, britpop-infused dance night. Mix in some post-punk, electro, garage, and indie pop tunes, garnish with a slice of glam rock. Enjoy”. We’re hoping they play The Drowners and Do You Remember The First Time.

SUNDAY:
>> Veteran New York Times scribe Joseph Lelyveld speaks at Politics and Prose about his book “Omaha Blues” at 5 p.m. The bookstore says that the book will “resonate particularly with those in their late sixties, as he recalls World War II, the anti-Red frenzy, and the march toward Civil Rights.”

>> Bruce Springsteen’s good friend Tommy Morello and the rest of Audioslave will be in town to tear the roof off of the 9:30 club. The show is sold out, but there is always Craigslist.

>> What becomes of the broken hearted? Well, if you’re David Gedge (pictured, thanks Chromewaves!) you start an indie rock outfit with loud guitars and write tunes about birds with daft song titles. Gedge recently reformed his first (and best) band, The Wedding Present, and they are hitting DC behind their latest release Take Fountain. DCist is so there. With Crystal Skulls and The Jet Age (fka Hurricane Lamps) at the Black Cat. Doors are at 8:30, tickets are $15.

And take time out this weekend to get those Pixies/Bloc Party tickets.

What do you have planned for this weekend? And do you have any suggestions for things to do in and around Columbus, Ohio, tonight? If so, leave your suggestions in comments. Have a good weekend!
