Mayor’s Poverty Initiative Examined: Mayor Williams’ New Communities Initiative would spur development in poor neighborhoods by seeking to draw middle income families to new housing, the Post reports. The program is due to what one observer called a “perfect storm” of conditions: high land values, a city budget surplus, and a heightened political will on the part of Mayor Williams. The Post reports that many residents of low-income communities seem skeptical of the plan.
E-cycling to Expand: After a successful event this spring, city officials are making plans to expand the e-cycling program year-round at the city’s two trash transfer stations, the W. Times reports. When that happens the director of D.C. public works hopes the Council will prohibit “disposal of household electronics items in residential trash collections.”
WWI Veterans Remembered: A group of about 60 attended the annual ceremony at the the District World War Memorial, the only D.C. government memorial on the National Mall. The memorial was listed as an endangered place in D.C. architecture in 2003.
