To the winos out there (like Miles Raymond of “Sideways” seen here), take note. The Supreme Court has ruled in a 5-4 decision to ban certain interstate commerce restrictions that have limited the reach of small- and medium-sized wineries nationwide. According to the Post, the high court said that interstate commerce “trumps the states’ rights to regulate alcohol sales.”
The ruling could benefit local wineries gain access to various states with wine trade barriers, like Michigan and New York. But if you live in the D.C. area, don’t expect this to dramatically change how you buy your wine.
From the Post:
The District allows residents to purchase a bottle a month by mail, Virginia allows winemakers in and out of state to ship to its residents, and Maryland bans all wine shipments directly to consumers whether the winemaker is in the state or not.
