We hope you had a relaxing and cool weekend. The summer heat has been in the news – from sweltering D.C. public schools to a D.C. apartment without working A/C. How have you stayed cool? The photo is the Smithernees performing at Celebrate Fairfax. Today temps will be in the 80s and it will be partly cloudy with a chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon.
Capital Pride a Success: The weekend’s 30th anniversary Capital Pride festival was successful thanks to good weather and large crowds. The celebration was tempered by ongoing financial problems of the Whitman-Walker Clinic, a major sponsor of Pride, which recently cut their budget of more than $2.5 million and laid off a quarter of their staff to control costs. Flickr users have uploaded 60 photos from last weekend tagged with “Capital Pride” – see them here.
Weekend Violence Claims Three Lives: The details of two incidents that claimed the lives of three young men in the area last weeekend are still emerging. Early Sunday morning two young men were shot on Harvard street in Columbia Heights, the Post reports. Upon hearing of the incident Councilmember Jim Graham wrote in an email that “MPD informs me that the area will have 8 additional officers assigned, and various other police resources will be there. I am also informing community resources so that they can assist the families. My office is of course ready to be of assistance as well.” Also early yesterday an 18-year-old described by friends as mild-mannered was stabbed to death in a suburban subdivision at a friend’s birthday party in Germantown. NBC4 reports police are hoping help from the public will help locate the suspects.
