Have you heard anything about Live on Penn making a comeback for the summer?
Last summer when DCist was in super-secret beta mode, we actually answered this very same query when the concert series was abruptly stopped in July 2004. So no, no comeback in the works as far as we have heard.
But have no fear, Fort Reno’s summer lineup was just released today. The series kicks off tomorrow with The Rude Staircase, Sentai and Gist. Part of the issue noted for the Live at Penn closing was financial constraints. Fort Reno’s site has donation and volunteer information, so if you like free summer concerts (who wouldn’t, really?) consider offering a donation or some of your time to The Northwest Youth Alliance in support of these events. Concerts start at 7:15 p.m. Take the Metro Red Line to Tenleytown and follow these walking directions (.30 miles).
Additional summer concerts suggestions include:
- National Gallery of Art’s Jazz in the Garden series (Fridays 5 – 8 p.m.). Ask DCist is fond of this for a light Friday evening. A perfect place to sip a little wine with friends or wind down with a book around the fountain.
- Carter Baron Amphitheatre’s concerts (mostly free)in Rock Creek Park.
- Millenium Stage at the Kennedy Center. OK, so this isn’t a “summer concert series”, and usually the location is inside, but last year we recall a Polyphonic Spree concert offered at the outside South Plaza Stage for free.
- Concert series in Alexandria, Arlington, Bethesda, Gaithersburg, and Fairfax offer local sounds for your enjoyment with your friends, neighbors and even the family dog throughout the summer.
And then of course Ask DCist must suggest Unbuckled. It isn’t free ($7), it’s not outside (Black Cat Backstage), but it is this summer (Thursday, June 30) and it will feature two terrific bands (Cartel and Bicycle Thieves). We expect to see you there.
