MONDAY:
>> Watch a cartoon (and, according to reader comments, hipsters) come to life. Adding further cred to the notion that pop music is respectable as long as it’s from another country, the wildly popular duo Puffy AmiYumi bring their unforgettable show to the 9:30 Club tonight, with opener Adam Richman. 6 p.m., $20
TUESDAY:
>> Because we love A Smokey Mountain Christmas, because the original version is always better, and because there’s nothing cooler than making an amusement park in your own image, DCist encourages you to throw your self-consciousness aside and take in a show from one of the greats. Dolly Parton at DAR Constitution Hall. $55 – $75, 8 p.m.
>> Rock en español is hott. And no local area band of the genre could claim to be más en fuego than Papas Underground. Think the Strokes, but with hotter accents. With Stone Gato and Machetres. At DC9, $7.
WEDNESDAY:
>> Still enthralled by the sexy-creepy “Wicked Game” video? So are we. Catch Chris Isaak while you can. Wolf Trap. $25 – $38, 8 p.m.
>> LA-based five-piece The Temporary Thing packs things up and heads east. Catch them tonight at Jammin Java or Thursday at Velvet Lounge. They sound a little bit like a lot of things, but their melodious hook is sure to grab you. Tues: $8, 8 p.m. Wed: 8 p.m.
THURSDAY:
>> In case you didn’t get your fill of country music matriarchs on Tuesday, head to the Birchmere and catch Emmylou Harris. No matter your musical tastes, it’s hard to avoid enchantment by this lady’s lilting harmonies. The show’s sold out, but you may be able to strike a deal on Craigs list. 7 p.m.
>> While we’d love to make dirty jokes based on David Allan Coe’s lyrics, DCist fears our more sensitive readers may be offended. Click away if you’re curious, and catch him at Hanover, Maryland’s Cancun Cantina tonight, or Falls Church’s State Theater on Friday to be insulted in person. ($20 – $21, 9 p.m.)
FRIDAY:
>> Every teen needs a heartthrob. If Omarion made you swoon in You Got Served and your heart skips a beat as you anticipate Bow Wow in Roll Bounce, then get thyself to BET’s Scream Tour at the MCI Center. ($45, 8 p.m.)
SATURDAY:
>> Will Hoge strikes us as taking himself very, very seriously. The Nashville-based rock singer released a protest album in the heat of last year’s presidential race. And his Web site includes effusive statements comparing himself to Springsteen, the Rolling Stones, and Otis Redding. But D.C. is a serious sort of city. We think he’ll fit in just fine. With Army of Me, and Unbuckled vets Bicycle Thieves at 9:30 Club. $12. Note: This show is Sat., Sept. 3, not Aug. 27.
SUNDAY:
>> End the summer with some nostalgia at Wolf Trap with the Beach Boys. These guys did more for summertime, harmony, and Uncle Jessie than we care to expound on. Put on your board shorts and enjoy the show. $25 – $34, 2 p.m. or 8 p.m.
