D.C. Public Schools start classes bright and early Monday, August 29, and the grounds (not to mention the interiors) of many District schools are in sorry shape. It’s time to do a little weeding, painting, mulching and pruning. Schools, parents and community groups are joining forces and co-sponsoring a beautification day this Saturday, August 27, and asking for your help. Our area schools — especially in Ward One — need a little TLC to kick the school year off smartly.

According to an e-mail from Alan Heymann (communications director for Council Member Jim Graham)

The DC Council and the Mayor have provided $6 million in surplus funds for repairs and renovations, but these are mainly dollars for the inside of the schools. Saturday’s work project is outside. Volunteers will help with sweeping, weeding, planting, painting, and general cleanup of the grounds.

Sounds fun, right? Work begins at 8 a.m. (volunteers can show up at anytime during the morning) and goes until 1 p.m. You can register beforehand, or simply show up at your neighborhood public school and do a little good in your community. Volunteers have been asked to bring work gloves, brooms, dust pans, saws, etc., as well as their own water and snacks.
