Two days after Hurricane Katrina made landfall in the U.S. the D.C. area saw some of the storm’s remnants yesterday as thunderstorms carrying high winds and heavy rain passed through the region last night. Today will be partly sunny with a 30 percent chance of showers or thunderstorms in the afternoons, with highs in the upper 80s. Baby Panda Gains Four Pounds: Zoo officials told the Post that the National Zoo’s baby panda has gained four pounds and was very active during a physical exam yesterday. One official told the paper that “When I was putting the tape measure over his little head, he kept bobbing his head and kind of protesting.” Go, panda! Meanwhile, the voting continues on the zoo’s website for a name. The photo is also from the zoo’s website.

Metro Employees Get Anti-Terror Training: WMATA has decided to give all 10,000 of their employees training about how to spot terrorists and respond to attacks, the Examiner reports. The training includes how to approach passengers and identify suspicious behavior.

D.C. Running Short on Ambulances: Paramedics with the D.C. fire department have responded to emergencies in backup vehicles due to a shortage in the city’s ambulance fleet, the W. Times reports. City officials say the situation is temporary and due to a high number of heat-related calls, but the paramedics union says mismanagement is to blame. Regardless, the city says they are planning to buy more soon.
