We here at DCist have long been fans of Cultural Tourism DC, a non-profit coalition of community organizations that encourage cultural tourism and promote “economic development and hometown appreciation of the capital’s rich variety of heritage and arts attractions.” We have found their online event directory and weekly newsletters a useful source of information on an eclectic mix of cultural events and sites around the city.
Thus, we couldn’t help but agree to be an official media sponsor for the fall edition of their “WalkingTown” program. The organization sponsors free interpretive historic and cultural walks in different neighborhoods throughout the year, and periodically organizes a number of free walks on one day. On Saturday, October 1 the organization is sponsoring no less than 28 separate tours in neighborhoods across the city, including historic tours in Kenilworth, Shaw, Anacostia, Capitol Hill, U Street, Dupont Circle, Georgetown, Chevy Chase, and Mount Pleasant. Other walks include two bike tours of the Anacostia River area, a Spanish-language tour of the Cultural Institute of Mexico, kid-centric events at Lafayette Square and the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial, and tours focusing on the history of the District’s LGBT communities.
This DCist will be going on both of the tours of Shaw to learn a bit about our new neighborhood, although the bike tour hosted by none other than District Department of Transportation Director Dan Tangherlini sounds interesting. Which walks sound good to you?
