Before delving into the week’s picks, we want to point out a couple of hurricane benefits that are happening this week. This Thursday, come out and support musicians affected by hurricane Katrina. The State Theater in Falls Church hosts the Hell or High Water Benefit, featuring the legendary Chuck Brown. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door, with all proceeds benefitting the MusiCares Katrina Fund. 7 p.m.
If you’re feeling philanthropic as the weekend comes to a close, head to the Austin Grill in Silver Spring for the Just The Basics Benefit. The Silver Spring Moose Lodge is working to reach their goal of 100,000 pounds of supplies for hurricane victims. Entry is free and donations will get you coupons and chances at prizes. The concert features The Grandsons, JP McDermott & Western Bop, and the Karl Straub Combo. 7:30 – 10:30 p.m.
If we hadn’t been at home sick yesterday, we would have told you to check out night #2 of Death Cab and Stars, or Karmella’s Game. Let us know if you caught either of those shows.
TUESDAY
>> It’s a big week for sold out shows at 9:30. Craig may be able to help you work your way into tonight’s Social Distortion show. It’s a full night, with three openers. DCist reccomends strapping on your dancing shoes and getting there in time to see Brit rockers The Dead 60s. 7:30 p.m.
>> UPDATE: We forgot to prompt you to check out My Favorite Dress at St. Ex tonight, with DJs Kathryn Wildt and the holiday girl. Come out and dance before, after, or even during Social D. 10 p.m. to close.
WEDNESDAY
>> Canadian rockers Broken Social Scene bring their widely applauded live show to 9:30 tonight. It’s sold out too, but from what we hear, it’ll be worth the leg work to find a ticket. And openers Feist ain’t half bad either. 7:30 p.m.
>> If BSS doesn’t work out for you, flee the city and the club scene for the night and see Audioslave at the Patriot Center (map) with openers Seether. A good view of Chris Cornell would make it worth the trip. 8 p.m., $40.50.
>> If you can’t fight the seether, you can catch Veruca Salt at JAXX in Springfield. 7 p.m., $15.
