Leading into last night’s Wizards game, we’d all heard so much about Gilbert Arenas dropping 41 (then a career high) on Larry Hughes the last time they faced each other on opposing teams, that you just felt the Wiz were due for a letdown on the road in Cleveland.
Sure enough, Arenas, fresh off being named Eastern Conference Player of the Week following his 43 point outburst against San Antonio, shot 4-for-17 and dropped a “measly” 18 points, four less than Hughes, who also had eight assists on the night in a 114-99 Cavaliers win. LeBron James did his part for Cleveland with 37 points and 10 rebounds. Antawn Jamison kept DCist’s fantasy team afloat with 26 and 12, but more on that in a bit. “I couldn’t get to the basket,” Arenas told the AP. “Every time we made a run, LeBron answered. We just didn’t have it tonight.”
Despite the loss, the Wizards are 2-1 on the road and 5-2 overall, good enough to lead their division. However, after finishing their recent homestand at 3-1, the team now faces a tough stretch of seven of their next nine games on the road, including games at Minnesota and New Jersey this week. Thursday’s game against the Timberwolves will be televised nationally on TNT, the first of seven nationally televised games to feature the Wizards this year.
DCist’s fantasy triumverate of Arenas, Jamison and Brendan Haywood paid didvidends for us last week. Arenas scored 93 points and had 23 assists in three games. Jamsion only scored 50 points, but pulled in 28 rebounds. Haywood, a pickup off the waiver-wire, anchored our center position with 18 rebounds and four blocks while shooting 61% from the field.
