
According to the Chinese calendar, 2005 might have been the Year of the Rooster. But in the D.C. dining world, 2005 was most certainly the Year of the Phoenix. No other year in recent memory has seen so many elements of the District’s dining-and-drinks scene burn down to the ground — some more literally than others — only to be rebuilt again. And often as something else altogether.
The DCist Food team has reported on changes from the macrobiotic to the microgreens. We waded into the controversy on rapidly gentrifying neighborhoods in Shaw and Columbia Heights and along the U Street Corridor. We brought you news about facelifts and outright overhauls to the food sections of local publications. We told you about changes of the guard at area restaurants. And here at DCist, we lost two excellent Food editors to, shall we say, the call of more exotic locales. But through everything, we have soldiered on — tasting, cooking, drinking, and kibbitzing, all in the good name of hedonism.
