Internet reports are indicating that the Washington Wizards have bought out the contract of veteran point guard Chucky Atkins, essentially making him a free agent. Atkins, who left the team last week to be with his wife in Orlando as she gave birth, rejoined the team on Monday for their win over the visiting 76ers but did not suit up. We have to admit, this move seems odd given that the NBA trade season is heating up and since there is a definite market for veteran point guards right now. Surely Wizards GM Ernie Grunfeld could have worked something out to Atkins liking? Apparently not. “Chucky is a veteran player who is in the last year of his contract,” said Grunfeld. “He has been a real professional and this will allow him an opportunity to look for a situation that will give him the playing time that he desires.”
Fortunately, the Wiz have flourished without him, winning four straight since benching Brendan Haywood and Antawn Jamison last week, bringing their record to a not so dismal 17-19. Their defense is still suspect but the play of Antonio Daniels and Caron Butler is finally paying dividends. Butler has been playing so well that we’d hazard a guess he now ranks second on opposing teams defensive scouting reports.
Tonight the Wiz travel to Orlando to face the struggling Magic.
