Well, President George W. Bush and Republicans in Congress have almost completed a generation-long march towards pushing the Supreme Court rightwards, and with all the pieces finally in place, the conservative wing of the court will finally have its day today — Anna Nicole Smith is before them.

The former Playboy model and weight-loss promoter is appealing to the highest court of the land to ensure that she didn’t marry a man 63 years her senior for nothing. Smith feels entitled to part of his $1.6 billion estate, while her son-in-law seems to think that she’s a bit of a golddigger. The progression of her claim through the country’s courts has been such a train wreck in the making that the Post could only offer this of interest:

A long line of lawyers stretched through the Supreme Court hall more than three hours before the session was to begin, and camera crews were staked out in front of the building. About two dozen photographers scrambled to snap pictures of Smith and her attorney as they arrived at a side door of the court building. Several photographers were knocked to the ground in their zeal to get a picture of Smith, dressed in a knee-length dress, high heels and black sunglasses.

The Bush Administration has sided with Smith on the case, claiming that she raises interesting and important technical points regarding federal jurisdication on these matters.

Beyond subtly hinting that their intentions may be colored more by their memories of the May 1992 issue of Playboy than a legitimate interest in the law, we’re happy that Smith — who was part of a godly heterosexual union — reminds us of the importance of protecting traditional marriage. Just imagine the circus that would result from allowing gay couples to wed.
