What is art? In D.C. there seems to be a fine line between destruction of property and what is considered an appropriate form of expression. Last month we talked about Stamp Act Congress’ campaign to stamp their logo onto money to show support for their cause, and questioned the legalities behind the defacement of such currency.
In a similar fashion, two graduate students from an art school in San Francisco have recently started-up a website for a project entitled America Is Art in an attempt to seek a collective artistic response to the statement “America is (fill in the blank).” Just as with the extremely popular Post Secret, they ask that you submit your answer anonymously, but rather than on a postcard your response must be visually represented on the side of a one dollar bill. Of course, anyone participating must keep within the guidelines of the law, which they have available on the site.
Why should you send them your money? Well if having your masterpiece on display isn’t enough, at the end of the project, all of the proceeds will be donated to a worthy cause.
The America Is Art project will inevitably produce a quantity of usable currency. Therefore, all dollars collected will be donated to the advancement of Fine Arts educational programming in the Public School systems, specifically the Special Education divisions, in various parts of the country. Students with varying special needs, mental and/or physical, benefit from the implementation of the Fine Arts in their educational programming. No matter what type of individual limitations, most students with communication difficulties, learning disabilities and even social skill issues can relate to the creativity aspect of art.
Is your opinion worth a buck? How would you makeover your Washington?
