From time to time, we have a little miscommunication here at the site, and the morning roundup doesn’t get up as it normally does. Then we play a little game called live-blogging.
First Stop: I’m sure it comes as a shock that we tend to hit the Washington Post first thing in the morning. Being a demographics geek, my eyes are immediately drawn to a story revealing that Virginia’s Caroline and King George Counties, at the far southern end of the Metroplex, have joined Loudoun as wunderkinds of growth. All three are in the top ten fastest growing counties nationally, and home prices there have risen in kind. The Post also has an update on the MetroWest development at the Vienna metro station, and there is a story on resident nervousness in the Sursum Corda neighborhood due to a request by city officials to have the D.C. Council authorize the use of eminent domain on some properties.
Second Stop: At this point, we stop quickly by the Washington Times, usually just to see if there’s something worth making fun of. Tom Knott’s column is always a pretty good bet for inanity, so since we’re in a hurry, we’ll just link to that.
Third Stop: This is usually where we visit the Examiner, which has good days and bad for interesting news. It hasn’t helped that, after the redesign, Arlington news is about Arlington and Silver Spring news is about Silver Spring, but Washington news is about national politics. Today, there’s a short story on how the Drafthouse will offer live music. I gotta tell you, I have mixed feelings about that. There are lots of places you can smoke and drink while hearing a band. There are precious few where you can do that while watching a movie.
Lastly: Then we check out the local television affiliates. These guys are great for breaking news, but not as strong in the morning, when the papers all have fresh copy. NBC 4 has updates on the fire at Solomons Island (not Solomon Islands). Remember, there’s all kinds of wildfire warnings around…WJLA has a piece on plans to replace or fix up the MLK Jr. Memorial Library…WTOP has an hilarious story about a god-driven applicant attacking a guard at the CIA…And that’s probably enough. Time to give the post an edit, and then I’m off for coffee and a muffin.
